Mini-splits, for
the rooms ducts never reached.
Some spaces were never designed to be cooled. A converted garage, an addition, a home office, a workshop. Running new ductwork there is expensive and often impossible — a ductless system solves it without opening the walls.
Where they make sense
- Additions and converted spaces — garages, enclosed patios, attic conversions
- The one room that is always hot, no matter what the thermostat says
- Home offices and workshops that need cooling on a different schedule than the house
- Small commercial spaces — a back office, a server closet, a salon suite
- Older homes where there is nowhere sensible to put ducts
What you gain
Zone control
Cool the room you are in. You are not paying to condition a whole house for one occupied bedroom.
No duct losses
Ductwork in a hot Florida attic loses cooling on the way. Ductless removes that path entirely.
Quiet
The compressor is outside. Indoor heads run quietly enough for a bedroom or an office.
Multi-zone
One outdoor unit can serve several indoor heads, each with its own setting.
When a mini-split is the wrong answer
We will tell you when it is. If your central system is failing and the ductwork is intact, replacing the central system is usually the better investment. Mini-splits solve a specific problem — they are not a cheaper substitute for a whole-home system, and installing four heads to avoid one central replacement rarely comes out ahead.
Placement matters more than brand. A head mounted in the wrong spot short-cycles and leaves the far corner warm. We look at the room, how it is used and where the sun hits before deciding where anything gets mounted.
Maintenance
Ductless units need their filters and blower wheels cleaned like any other system — and because the head sits in the living space, a neglected one becomes noticeable fast. They can be added to a maintenance plan along with your central system.
