An AC making a new noise is almost always trying to tell you something. Banging usually means broken parts. Hissing usually means refrigerant leaks. Screeching usually means motor failure. Clicking usually means electrical problems. Most noises mean a repair is coming — but addressing them early is far cheaper than waiting for breakdown. Here's what each sound actually means.
Your AC has always made some noise. The hum of the fan, the click when it turns on, the soft whoosh of air through the vents. That's normal.
But when a new sound appears, your AC is sending you a message. Here's how to translate what it's saying — and how urgent the problem is.
Banging or clanking
Urgency: HIGH — turn off the system and call us.
Loud banging or clanking from your outdoor unit usually means a part has broken loose inside the compressor. Common causes:
- Broken or loose connecting rod inside the compressor
- Loose mounting bolts on the compressor
- Foreign object that fell into the unit (small rocks, twigs)
- Worn-out compressor that's about to fail completely
Why this is urgent: A broken part bouncing around inside your compressor will destroy the compressor very quickly. Compressor replacement is usually $1,500-$3,000+ and is often a "replace the whole system" decision. Catching this early can mean a $300 repair instead of a $3,000 one.
Hissing or whistling
Urgency: MEDIUM-HIGH — schedule service within a day or two.
Hissing usually means one of two things:
Refrigerant leak (most common)
Your AC contains pressurized refrigerant. When a leak develops, you can hear the gas escaping. This won't fix itself — and as refrigerant levels drop, the system loses cooling capacity, ices over, and eventually fails.
With R-410A getting more expensive (see why here), refrigerant leaks are now more important to address quickly than they were a few years ago.
Air duct leak (less common)
If the hissing comes from inside your home rather than from the unit itself, you may have a duct leak. This wastes conditioned air, drives up bills, and pulls dirty attic air into your home.
Screeching or squealing
Urgency: HIGH — call us soon.
High-pitched screeching usually means a motor or fan problem:
- Failing fan motor (indoor or outdoor)
- Worn-out fan belt (older units)
- Bearings on motor going bad
- Compressor under high pressure (dangerous — turn it off)
If the screeching is loud and constant, especially from the outdoor unit, turn off the system at the breaker and call for service. Running a screeching compressor can destroy it within hours.
Clicking
Urgency: depends on the pattern
Clicks at startup and shutdown
This is usually normal — your relays are engaging. Healthy systems click once when starting and once when shutting off. No action needed.
Repeated clicking without the system starting
This is a warning sign. The system is trying to start but failing — usually due to:
- Failing capacitor (most common — affordable repair)
- Defective contactor
- Low refrigerant triggering safety cutoff
- Tripped breaker that needs investigation
Don't keep trying to force it to start. Each failed start stresses the system. Schedule service.
Buzzing
Urgency: depends on location
Buzzing usually points to electrical issues:
- Loose wiring — this can cause electrical fires; address quickly
- Failing capacitor or contactor — usually affordable to fix
- Refrigerant leak in the compressor — gas escaping past worn valves
- Electrical issue with the breaker or wiring — investigate immediately
Rattling
Urgency: LOW-MEDIUM — schedule service when convenient
Rattling is usually less serious than banging. Common causes:
- Loose panels or cabinet screws on the unit
- Twigs, leaves, or debris inside the condenser
- Loose mounting feet on the outdoor unit
- Bent fan blade lightly hitting the cage
If it's just leaves in the unit, you can clear them yourself (turn off power first). If the rattling continues after clearing debris, schedule service.
Humming (loud)
Urgency: MEDIUM
A loud, persistent hum from your outdoor unit (different from normal operating sound) usually means the compressor is running but struggling — often due to:
- Failing compressor
- Voltage problems
- Failing capacitor (very common)
- Refrigerant pressure issues
Bubbling or gurgling
Urgency: MEDIUM
You may hear water bubbling sounds from your indoor unit. Causes:
- Refrigerant leak (the gurgling is leaking refrigerant)
- Clogged condensate drain line — water backing up
- Air bubbles in refrigerant lines indicating leaks
If you also see water leaking from the indoor unit, the drain line is clogged — a common Florida problem. Our maintenance checklist covers how to clear this yourself.
Whirring or whining
Urgency: MEDIUM
A continuous high-pitched whirring usually points to:
- Belt slipping on motor (older units)
- Motor bearings failing
- Blower fan unbalanced
The honest truth about AC noises
Almost every "weird AC noise" question we get falls into one of two categories:
- "My AC has always made this sound" — usually fine, especially if cooling is normal
- "My AC just started making this sound" — almost always means something needs attention
If the noise is new, your AC is telling you to look at it. Some sounds (banging, screeching, electrical buzzing) mean stop the system now. Others (rattling, mild humming) just mean schedule service.
The mistake we see most often is homeowners ignoring a new sound for weeks. By the time they call, what was a $300 repair has become a $1,500 emergency. New sounds are warnings — listen to them.
What to do right now
- Identify the type of sound using this guide
- Note where it's coming from (indoor unit vs. outdoor unit)
- For dangerous sounds (banging, electrical buzzing, screeching), turn the system off at the thermostat AND breaker
- For other sounds, you can keep running it briefly while you arrange service
- Call us — we'll diagnose it free as part of any service visit
Recording the sound on your phone before we arrive is incredibly helpful — sometimes noises stop or change once we're there. Schedule service or call (754) 305-0005 if your AC is talking to you.
